Living room wall tiles design: feature walls, TV walls and highlighters
In a living room, tiles usually go on one wall: behind the TV, behind the sofa or along the dining space. Here is how to choose the wall, the design and the size so it looks designed, not busy.
Living room walls are usually painted, so a tiled wall stands out at once. That is the point: one wall, tiled well, becomes the feature of the room. Tiles also take knocks and stains that paint does not, which helps behind a TV unit or a dining table.
Which wall to tile
- The TV wall. The most common choice: the tiles frame the TV and give it a clean background.
- Behind the sofa. A calmer option when the TV sits on a smaller wall.
- The dining wall. Easy to wipe, so it suits the wall beside the table.
- The entrance or passage. A short wall seen from the door sets the tone of the house.
Designs for living rooms
Patterns and patchwork make a bold TV wall.
Stone, brick and strip looks give texture without the weight of real stone.
Soft botanical prints suit living rooms that open onto bedrooms or a quiet seating area.
Highlighter panels
A fully tiled wall is not the only way. A panel of pattern tiles behind the TV with plain tiles around it, or a vertical strip beside it, looks designed and uses fewer feature tiles. See highlighter tiles.
Size and finish
| Choice | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 300 × 600 mm (12 × 24 inch) | Fewer joints on a large wall |
| Size | 300 × 450 mm (12 × 18 inch) | Smaller walls and panels |
| Finish | Matt | No glare from lights or the TV screen |
| Finish | Glossy | A brighter wall in a dim room |
Matt is usually the better choice behind a TV, because it does not reflect lights onto the screen.
Lighting
A strip light or wall washers above the wall bring out the texture in stone and brick looks. Light from straight in front flattens it.
Practical points
- Plan the TV bracket and the wiring before tiling, and drill through the joints where you can.
- Start the layout from the centre of the wall so the cut tiles at both ends are the same width.
- Keep the floor and ceiling simple when the wall is bold.
