Kitchen wall tiles design for Indian kitchens
Indian kitchens see oil, turmeric and steam every day, so kitchen wall tiles have to clean easily and still look good. Here is how to plan the backsplash, pick a finish and choose a design.
In an Indian kitchen the wall behind the platform takes oil splashes, turmeric and steam every day. Glazed ceramic wall tiles are the standard answer because they wipe clean and do not hold stains. The rest is design.
How much of the wall to tile
| Option | What it covers | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Backsplash band | The gap between the platform and the wall cabinets, usually about 2 ft | Less tiling, and the band becomes the feature |
| Full wall | Platform to ceiling on the cooking wall | Easiest to clean, looks finished |
| Whole kitchen | Every wall | Best for heavy daily cooking |
Glossy or matt near the hob
Glossy tiles wipe clean fastest, which matters behind the hob and the sink. Matt tiles hide fingerprints and water marks, and suit the rest of the kitchen or a dining wall. A common mix is glossy behind the hob and sink, matt on the rest.
Kitchen designs that work
Strip and subway looks are timeless and go with any cabinet colour.
Patterns and Moroccan designs make the backsplash the feature of the kitchen.
A highlighter band of pattern tiles between plain tiles adds colour without filling the wall. See highlighter tiles.
Colours
- Light colours (white, cream, light grey) keep a small kitchen bright.
- Greens, blues and terracotta suit wooden or white cabinets.
- A busy pattern hides splashes better than plain white.
- Many families follow Vastu guidance, which commonly favours warm, light colours in the kitchen.
Which size
300 × 450 mm (12 × 18 inch) is the usual kitchen wall tile and fits a 2 ft backsplash band with few cuts. 300 × 600 mm (12 × 24 inch) gives fewer grout lines on a full wall. Grout lines are where dirt collects, so fewer joints make cleaning easier.
Grout and cleaning
- Epoxy grout resists oil and turmeric stains far better than cement grout.
- Wipe splashes the same day with a mild detergent. Avoid acids and scrubbing pads on glossy tiles.
How many boxes
Measure the tiled area in square feet, add 10% for cuts, and divide by 7.5 for 300 × 450 mm boxes. A backsplash 10 ft long and 2 ft high is 20 sq ft, 22 with cuts, so 3 boxes.
